Two men convicted and fined for breaching mining laws near Inverell
On 23 December 2021, Inverell Local Court convicted and fined Robert John Walburn (65 years old) and Jedadiah Blake Walburn (36 years old), both of Inverell, a total of $60,000 each for three offences of mining without authorisation under section 5 of the Mining Act 1992.
The convictions are the result of an inspection conducted by Regulator staff on 16 November 2020 at a property on Rickey’s Lane Sapphire (near Inverell) where it was suspected that illegal mining was taking place.

Opal mining video launched to improve safety for people working in shafts and at height
We have published a video to increase awareness within the opal mining community of the risks of working at height and working in shafts. Falls from height are a significant safety risk that can lead to serious injury or death and we are committed to working closely with the opal industry to improve safety outcomes.
The falls from height safety awareness video was produced in partnership with the Lightning Ridge mining community and highlights the impact that safety incidents can have on family, friends and colleagues.

Lightning Ridge information sessions in March
We are holding information sessions in March in Lightning Ridge for opal miners to learn more about safety and to improve their environmental awareness.
The Opal Mining Safety Workshop will be held on 22 and 23 March and covers the knowledge and skills required to be a mine operator at an opal mine. Topics include safety policy, hazard identification, maintenance, risk management, people management, emergency response plans and contractors. The Lightning Ridge environmental awareness course will be held on 24 March and will include an overview on how to minimise damage to the environment while conducting exploration and mining activities. 2022 Small Mines Roadshow - tickets now available
Tickets are now available for our annual health and safety roadshow for small mines and quarries, held across NSW during February, March, and April 2022. These free, full-day workshops provide valuable information and resources to the small mines' sector that will assist you to maintain safe mining practices and also provide an opportunity for face-to-face engagement with the Regulator.
